A: Salvation is the act of God demonstrating His undeserved grace and mercy to everyone who will receive it. The Bible says that it is the only way to restore the broken relationship between us and God. Jesus was approached by a Jewish religious guy, named Nicodemus, came to Jesus by night. He was curious and wanted to know how to get to heaven.
Look at what Jesus said to him:
John 3:1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.” 3 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” 4 “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” 5 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” 9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. 10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
Q: What must I do to receive Christ?
A: You must recognize and admit that you are not perfect (in light of God’s righteousness). We have all sinned according to the Bible. Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; Romans 3:10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; Recognize that the penalty for sin is death - separation from God. But thankfully God pays the penalty for us: Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Understand that God’s grace is given freely and is in no way based on our own goodness. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Recognize Jesus for who He is and accept his gift of salvation. Romans 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Q: What do I have to do to receive eternal life?
A: Believe. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Q: Believe what?
A: Believe that Jesus is the one and only Son of God, God in human flesh who came to earth to die in your place because of His love for you.
Q: Is there anything I can do to earn my salvation?
A: Not a chance! Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
Q: Can I be sure of eternal life?
A: Yes. 1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
Q: Can I lose me salvation?
A: No we are adopted as sons and daughters of God. Nothing can break that bond and nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. (Romans 8:31-39) ; John 10:27-29 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
How can I be sure of eternal life and a personal relationship with God?
ADMIT that you are not perfect. The Bible calls this sin, and since sin would pollute Heaven, it cannot be allowed in. (Romans 3:3, Romans 6:23)
RECOGNIZE that God loves you in spite of your sin. In fact, He loves you so much that he sent His only Son to pay for all your sin, dying in your place (John 3:16, Romans 5:8)
ACCEPT that there is nothing you could ever do that could make you good enough to enter Heaven. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
TRANSFER your trust from yourself to Jesus as your only hope for Heaven. (John 3:36)
BELIEVE and trust that Jesus paid in full the bill that was owed to restore you to a proper relationship with your Heavenly Father. (Romans 4:5)
